On June 25, 2009, MJ fans across the world mourned the end of an era. On his second death anniversary, singer-choreographer Ganesh Hegde announces his next album where he has paid tribute to the pop icon.
“Michael Jackson has been my biggest inspiration for music as well as choreography. He gave me the reason to believe that even people like myself, who come from a very humble background can make it big with talent and hardwork. The songs in my new album have been influenced by his style and technique,” says Ganesh. The album, tentatively titled, Let’s Party, will comprise of six dance tracks and four ballads.
The choreographer, who is known for directing the moves for some of Bollywood’s earliest item numbers like Mujhe Mast Mahaul… from Fiza (2000) and Babuji Zara Dheere Chalo… from Dum (2003) remembers his dream moment when he got to meet MJ in person.
“In 1996, MJ had come to Mumbai for a concert and I was performing as the opening act. When he came backstage, there was a sudden commotion and all my dancers on stage turned their backs towards the audience to look at him! Later, he called for us in his room, where I told him that I was the choreographer for the act and he shook hands with me. I also told him ‘I love you’ to which he replied ‘I love you too’. He was really a great personality,” reminisces Ganesh.
Endeavouring to create the larger-than-life feel musical and stage presence that was synonymous with the late pop star, Ganesh reveals that he conceives his dance moves for the future song video even before composing the track, “I am a dancer first and like my songs to have ample scope for the dance moves I conceptualise. I do not model my choreography on a given track. Rather, I think it’s a blessing that since I am a musician also, I am able to create songs from the dancer’s point of view,” he smiles. As far as his music goes, he maintains that all his songs are high on melody. “I have tried to strike a balance between traditional Indian as well as new-age international sounds in this album,” says he.
