Kiran wanted me to sing DK Bose: Sampath

Music director Ram Sampath, who last worked on the soundtrack of this year’s Luv Ka The End, talks about composing the music for upcoming movie Delhi Belly.

Music director Ram Sampath, who last worked on the soundtrack of this year’s Luv Ka The End, mentions that he doesn’t like the sound of his own voice. Regarding his singing in the irreverently catchy song Bhaag DK Bose… from Delhi Belly, he says, “It troubles me a lot and takes me a long time to get used to it."

According to the 32-year-old composer, it was producer Kiran Rao who egged him on to do the vocals for the track. “It was Kiran who really pushed the hardest for me to sing. She was so certain, that she wanted me to go with the original ‘scratch’ vocals to maintain that raw feel,” Sampath says.

But it’s the third number in the Delhi Belly soundtrack that Sampath is most proud of. Saigal blues…, which Sampath describes as being the holy communion of Ry Cooder (blues-rock), DJ Shadow (electronica) and KL Saigal, couldn’t have been possible without vocalist Chetan Shashital. “He’s a vocal scientist, an encyclopaedia of Indian music and a phenomenal mimicry artist,” Sampath says, adding, “He comes from an advertising background, but is an excellent singer.”

So what’s next for the composer? “I’m doing the music for Reema Kagti’s Zakhmi (the film stars Aamir Khan opposite Kareena Kapoor), but all I can say for now is that it’s the polar opposite of what you’ve heard in Delhi Belly. I haven’t made that kind of music since I was 22,” Sampath signs off.
