Meghdeep Bose: Commercial success of a song has never been my agenda

Music producer Meghdeep Bose says he only wants to focus on making every song different from his previous ones.

Meghdeep Bose might not be among the most popular music producers in the industry, but the 26-year-old is responsible for producing some of the biggest Bollywood hit songs such as Main Hoon Hero Tera (Hero, 2015), Bol Do Na Zara (Azhar, 2016) and Jab Tak ( MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, 2016). However, success doesn’t bother him much, and he only wants to focus on making every song different from his previous ones.

“Every time I produce, I simply adhere to my composer’s brief on the song, and keep in mind the situation that I am producing for. The commercial success of the song has never been an agenda for me. To state the fact, many ‘piece of art’ songs I’ve produced, haven’t been such hits. But I am happy that I could make great music irrespective of their commercial stature,” says Meghdeep.

The singer admits that music producers and composers “are pressed by music labels” to release hit songs. “We’re told to follow a particular template and genre for commercial safety, so delivering a fresh track within the same genre is a challenge,” he says.

The Indore born producer, who has been in the industry for more than five years, says there is a symbiotic relation between music producers and composers.

“A composer is the person who makes the main melody or tune of a song. Melody is basically what you usually hum and sing. A producer is the person who wraps that melody with harmonies, rhythm, sonic scapes etc. and turns it into a record that could be played on different platforms. The tune is like a naked body, and the arrangements/productions are the attire that cover it and give it a distinct look,” explains Meghdeep.
