Haunted has the virtue of being India’s first 3D horror movie. Does that mean it’ll also be a first in terms of its music soundtrack? Well, yes and no. Chirantan Bhatt who’s taken on the role of music director, has composed tracks for films like Mission Istanbul (2008) and Allah Ke Banday (2010). But he’s done better work in the past, and that becomes clear once you hear this OST.

The first song in the album, Tum ho mera pyar… has a dated tone that sounds straight out of the early ’90s. Jaaniya… that’s sung by Siddharth Basrur is a mellow piece with a synthesised beat. Unfortunately, Basrur’s voice is very restrained and lacks emotion. At times, his Hindi singing breaks into an English accent, making his performance sound forced. Neither song feels like it belongs in a horror movie.

It’s the next song Tera hi bas… and the last track in the album Sau baras… that somewhat add an element of intrigue. The former is a bit boring and cranky. Sau baras… though, does sound like a haunted number. It’s rather eerie and desolate, and the background vocals are delivered well, almost as if phantoms were singing.

The only song of any effect or consequence is You’re so beautiful… that’s capably sung by indie musician Nikhil D’Souza. He sings well, imparting a Coldplay type of mood to the music. Good acoustic melodies and vocal harmonies make the track appealing.

How any of these tracks are fit for a horror movie is anybody’s guess though. The overall tone is cranky and sombre. You’re so beautiful… and Sau baras… stand out, but the same can’t be said about the other songs. Thank god there are no remixes included though!

What we like
Nikhil D’Souza’s singing in You’re so beautiful…
Eeriness of Sau Baras….

What we don’t like
Soundtrack sounds dated and straight out of the ’90s.
