Music review: Robot, Anjaana Anjaani

Film: RobotMusic: A R RahmanLyrics: Swanand KirkireSwanand Kirkire has either left behind a career in science for movies, or has had some electric wires for dinner before penning the songs for Robot. For instance, in the breezy ballad, Pagal anukan, Mohit Chauhan gives us a glimpse of how future generations will romance each other through Neutrons, electrons neele naino mein bolo kitne hain? (‘What’s the count of the neutrons and electrons in your eyes?’). To seal the deal, Chauhan adds, Main Newton-Newton keh sakya (‘I can finally say Newton-Newton’). In the tribal-sounding, fun number Kilmanjaro, Javed Ali announces his love for Chinmaya by going back to his roots… Way back: Mohenjadaro, mohenjadaro, isko dil mein utaro (‘Mohenjadaro, put her down my heart’).

And in the Wall-E-meets-disco electronic dance number, Boom boom robot da, Madhushree blatantly hits on the robot, hinting at what lies in store for men: Auto auto wala, automatic kala, minnatein karein hain sab autograph do (‘Err.. Automatic dude, everyone wants your autograph’). Vishal-Shekhar are back with another peppy, vibrant album that showcases the young urban sound that the duo has perfected. This is a complete Bollywood album, with a foot-tapping club number (Title song), a feel-good romantic song (Tumse hi tumse), an infectious, energetic track I feel good, a well-composed sad song (Tujhe bhula diya), an alternative/soft rock version of the title song, and a pulsating number that will get you going any time of the day. Watch out for Hairat that combines Lucky Ali’s dreamy vocals, Warren Mendonsa’s kickass electric guitar and Vishal-Shekhar’s part-rock, part-operatic music into a hell of a song. But Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has already done-to-death songs like Aa paas khuda before: he deserved something fresh.
