Tere Mere composer Amaal Mallik: Singles do better than albums

Music composer Amaal Mallik, whose song Tere Mere from Chef has become a hot favourite, explains why artists in the West prefer releasing individual songs all the more.

Music composer Amaal Mallik is someone who has composed all the songs for films such as M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016) and Noor (2017). He has also worked on singles such as Sau Aasmaan (Baar Baar Dekho; 2016) and Sab Tera (Baaghi; 2016). He prefers the latter, because not taking up full albums means he’s able to experiment with his creativity, freely.

“When you are a part of an all ensemble kind of thing, with many composers in one film, you get the freedom to work on one, or maybe two songs, and experiment without thinking too much about the film. And right now, even in the West, artists prefer releasing singles over albums. Singles tend to do better than albums,” says Amaal.

The composer anyway likes to get out of his comfort zone, and dabbling with just two or three songs in an album helps him achieve that. “Having said that, composing for an entire film is a completely different challenge altogether. With every film, for which I’m the only composer, I try to switch genres. I find that really exciting,” says Amaal, who composed the song, Tere Mere, as a guest composer for Raja Menon’s upcoming film, Chef, starring Saif Ali Khan.
