Three persons suffered burn injuries while several others escaped with minor injuries after an LPG cylinder exploded in a house at Sudamapuri locality of Vijay Nagar in Ghaziabad on Saturday morning. The incident also led to the collapse of the ceiling of the house, and caused damage to first storey of the house, police said.

The incident took place around 9am at the house of Mohammad Wajid who stays with his family on the ground floor while another family stays on the first floor of the building.

“The family members on the ground floor suffered burn injuries. They told us that there was a leakage in the LPG cylinder and when they tried to pull out the pipe, there was an explosion. This damaged their house as well as the ceiling which supports the first floor,” an officer from Vijay Nagar police station said.

The police said the three who suffered burns were rushed to Delhi for treatment.

“They were initially referred to MMG district hospital and from there, they were referred to Delhi. Wajid and his wife Raziya suffered severe injuries while their six-year-old son Uwaiz suffered minor burns. Their minor daughter and another woman who resided on the first floor escaped with minor injuries as well,” he said.

The police also called in a team of the National Disaster Response Force and the victims were rescued in a timely manner from the rubble.

“The injured persons were retrieved from the debris. We have come to know that the pipe of the cylinder developed a leakage and the cylinder itself caught fire. The family was preparing food when the incident happened. The three persons who suffered burns were rushed to Delhi for better treatment,” Dharmendra Chauhan, circle officer (city 1), said.
