The SSP assured them of a fair probe and asked the local circle officer to investigate the matter. However, he maintained that no FIR can be filed without primary investigation.

“The matter is sub judice. The complaint will be investigated,” he said.

Families of the accused persons had given a written complaint against the family of Ikhlaq for slaughtering a cow, following results of forensic analysis of the flesh.

“The police must register an FIR as the forensic report has confirmed that a cow was slaughtered. We will stage a protest and call a mahapanchayat of 144 villages if our demands are not met,” Sanjay Rana, father of the key accused in the case, Vishal, who was formerly associated with the BJP.

On Saturday, families of the accused persons had also met Rajnath Singh, the Union home minister, demanding a fair probe in the incident. Surendra Jain, the joint secretary of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, also visited Bisada on Saturday.

Nineteen persons were named in the FIR for murder and assault.

Eighteen of them were arrested and one was let go as he was confirmed to be elsewhere during the time of the incident. Last week, the Allahabad high court granted bail to one of the juvenile accused in the case.
