This is the second incident of drowning in the canal in two days. On June 18, two teenagers had drowned in the same canal, near Vasundhara. The incident on Tuesday took place near Vaishali’s Sector 4.

The girl was identified as Amreen, who had come from Seemapuri in Delhi along with her mother.

“Around 2pm, Amreen was taking a bath on the banks of the canal when she fell into the deep waters. Hearing her cries, a passerby, Suraj, from nearby Makanpur, stopped to save her. He too jumped into the canal to save the girl, but both drowned in the deep waters,” said a police spokesperson.

“With the help of police and local divers, both the victims were fished out, but they were declared brought dead at a hospital,” the spokesperson added.

During the incident, one of Suraj’s neighbours, Abhishek, had stopped on seeing the crowd gathered at the spot. He identified Suraj from his clothes and informed his family members.

The canal, which flows through Vasundhara and Vaishali, has been getting heavy water discharge from the Hindon barrage. On June 18 too, two teenagers, Shivam, 17, and Gunjan, 16, drowned near Vasundhara when they were trying to save their friend in the canal. Four of the friends had arrived from Daulatpura near GT Road in Ghaziabad to take a bath in the canal.
