The sudden application of brakes by a PMPML bus driver, to avoid a collision with a car, resulted in serious injuries to a woman passenger who was thrown outside the bus. Another woman travelling in the same bus also suffered serious injuries as a result of the driver’s action.
While 45-year-old Surekha Ujagare, a cleaning worker at Phadke hospital is now bed-ridden due to a crack in her back, the other woman, Nayana Upadhyay, is recovering from a surgery to fix a metal plate to help heal her broken leg on. The accident took place on October 25.
The women did not file a police case against the driver on the advice of the police, even as the driver who drove paid ₹ 9,000 in compensation. “We did not file a police case as the police said that we will not be able to claim compensation if we filed a case.
“We opted to take money instead as we needed it for the treatment. We received ₹9,000 from the bus driver. However, even after trying to reach the PMT (now known as Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited), no one has bothered to respond to us. They sent a person who was not an authority. When we asked for an authorised person to speak to, they started speaking badly with us,” said Haridas Ujagare (53), husband of the injured woman and a rickshaw driver.
Aniket Upadhyay, husband of Nayana Upadhyay, was at the hospital while his wife recovered from the surgery performed two days ago. The Indica driver paid them ₹11,000 which will only cover half their medical bill. The two couples only wish for some response and compensation from the people responsible for the injuries.
