There are around 1,269 school transport vehicles in Pimpri which haven’t been inspected by the sub regional transport office. This poses a grave threat to children who travel in these transport vehicles. The high court had issued a directive to the sub regional transport offices to conduct inspections of school transport vehicles between the summer vacations of school and June 15, to check whether a vehicle is fit to pick and drop students.

The deadline is long gone and schools have started, yet there are more than 1000 school transport vehicles which haven’t been inspected by the authorities. The sub regional transport office and the owners of such vehicles have failed to submit these vehicles for inspection.

After the inspection is carried out, if there are any technical problems in the vehicles then the repair instructions are given to the owners. Vehicle owners have neglected the high court directive and the sub regional transport office needs to look into this issue carefully since it deals with the life of students.Sub regional transport office has already stated their right to cancel the transport licence of those how breach the court’s direction but they have rarely used it.

Apart from checking the vehicles, the authority will also check if the vehicles follow stipulated the guidelines. Drivers and conductors of the buses also need to be checked. Under the sub regional transport office in Pimpri, there are a total of 1,778 school transport vehicles registered out of which only 519 school transport vehicle have been inspected and 1,269 vehicles are yet to be inspected. School transport vehicles inspection program is one of the ways to protect students, by ensuring safe transportation.
