Forts in the adjoining areas of Pune has made the region a trekking paradise. One such fort is the Tikona fort in Pune district, which is 51 km from Pune. This fort is pyramidal-shaped and is 3,500 feet high.
According to the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation Ltd (MTDC), Tikona (also known as Vitandgad) is one of the dominant hill forts in Maval in western India. It is said that this fort got its name Tikona, which means a triangle, from its pyramidal-shape. As per MTDC, the forts in the Deccan plateau have been built around 800 to 1000 AD.
This fort has been one of the favourite trekking destination for many. It is known for the temple of ‘Trimbakeshwar Mahadev’, a water tank and the Satvahan caves. The view of the Pawana dam and the forts of Tung, Lohagad and Visapur from this fort are a major attraction for trekkers.
According to MTDC, the fort can be explored in an hour as the area is not very large. Also, it hardly takes one hour to climb from the base to the top of the fort.
MTDC has stated that from the bastion, one can see fort Tung, which is adjacent to Tikona. Lohagad, Visapur, Bhatrashi hill, Morse hill, Jambhuli hill, Pauna region and Fagne dam can also be seen from the top of the hill. Trekking is allowed throughout the year at Tikona fort.
