26-year-old killed as racing BMW rams into pole on Ferozepur Road

Street racing claimed the life of a 26-year-old man, while his friend was seriously injured after the latter lost control of his BMW sports car and rammed into a pole on the Ferozepur Road on late Saturday night.

The deceased has been identified as Akshit Kharbanda, a resident of Udham Singh Nagar. His father, Parveen Kharbanda, owns Lyallpur Sweets in Model Town.

The injured is Rajat Chhabra, 26. He is the son of a wine contractor who also owns an amusement park. A several injured Chhabra has been admitted to a private hospital where his condition is stated to be critical.

The two-seater BMW Z4 car was wrecked in the incident.

According to reports, the duo was returning after partying. As they reached the Ferozepur Road, Chhabra began racing an Audi car. But as the car reached near MBD Neopolis Mall, Chhabra lost control over the car. As a result, the car jumped over the storm sewer laid on the roadside and rammed into a pole.

Kharbanda is survived by his wife and a two-month-old daughter. After an autopsy at the civil hospital, the family cremated the body on Sunday.

Inspector Amrinder Singh, station house officer (SHO), Sarabha Nagar police station, said the police were questioning eyewitnesses to establish the cause of the mishap.

Earlier on February 21, a car that was reportedly speeding overturned on Mall Road after hitting the road divider. In the mishap, one of the occupants of the car, Gurpreet Singh, 22, of Durgapuri of Haibowal, was killed on the spot, while his friend suffered severe injuries.
