As many as 274 students of various faculties were given doctor of philosophy (Ph.D) degrees, while 86 toppers in postgraduate and professional courses and 27 students in the undergraduate courses were also awarded gold medals during the 37th convocation of Punjabi University on Thursday.
This has been for the first time in the history of university that a record number of students were awarded PhD degrees since its establishment.
Girls proved their mettle as the chancellor medal in academics and sports, introduced for the first time, were awarded to Nisha Singla, as student of commerce department and Rekha Rani, an international cyclist.
Addressing the gathering, Patil said the understanding of religion and spirituality was the quintessence of an enlightened existence, leading to the evolution of a peaceful society in modern times.
He said Punjabi University had been playing a pivotal role in disseminating sacred values, common to all religions through its department of comparative religious studies. “A university has two major duties to perform-to provide useful information to students and to make them capable of creating new ideas, beyond the books, libraries, laboratories and classrooms”, he said.
While congratulating the students, professors and parents for their excellent achievements, Patil emphasized on developing a positive attitude, which was a panacea for all kinds of problems in life.
