Of the five policemen, only the main accused, SHO Sukhchain Singh, has been arrested so far.

Those suspended are head constables Avtar Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Amrik Singh, Major Singh and Gurbaj Singh.

Confirming this, SSP Harcharan Singh Bhullar said the four were suspended after being found guilty in the inquiry. A departmental inquiry has also been ordered against them.

The SSP said the investigation had been handed over to Dirba DSP Sharanjit Singh who was scrutinising the role of constables in registering the fake case. "It is important to know whether the accused constables intentionally countersigned the FIR or did this under pressure from SHO Sukhchain Singh."

He said they would be arrested if a concrete proof of their involvement came to the fore. Moreover, the accused had not joined investigation and were at large, the SSP said.
