A science student of DAV College, Sector 10, has been chosen the best air wing NCC cadet of India. Ankit Jaglan was felicitated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a gold medal in New Delhi on January 28.
Aspiring to join the armed forces, Jaglan, a second-year BSc student, and cadet of No 1 Chandigarh Air Squadron NCC, had no clue how to enter the defence services until she joined the National Cadet Corps (NCC) here in Chandigarh. “I joined NCC over a year ago,” she said.
Daughter of a retired Haryana police constable, Randhir Jaglan, she is the youngest of three sisters. The family lives in Sisai village in Hisar.
“In Haryana, girls do not know about the options that they can opt for career wise and are even discouraged sometimes. However, my parents have always been supportive.In fact my mother, Sunita Jaglan, asked me to join the NCC,” said Jaglan.
“I had read in newspapers about girls studying in Chandigarh and clearing prestigious exams, including tests for armed forces. So, I convinced my parents to send me here for further studies,” she said.
Apart from participating in pre Republic Day camps, she had to take different tests including a written test. For the award, she appeared for tests related to IQ, firing, drills, squad command and even cultural competitions.

{{/usCountry}}“It was one of the toughest challenges, as she had to compete with 17 boys and 17 girls,” said Wing Commander M R Pandeya, CO, 1 Chandigarh Air Squadron.
“I always wanted to become a fighter pilot and would love to join the Indian Air Force,” Ankit said. Principal BC Josan congratulated Ankit and lauded her efforts in achieving her goal.
