The Sikh clergy has once again deferred the hearing in the case pending before the Akal Takht on the alleged role of film star Amitabh Bachchan in instigating mobs against Sikhs residing in Delhi after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.
This the third time that the case has been deferred. It first came up before the clergy in November last year following a written communication from All-India Sikh Students’ Federation (AISSF) chief Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad, who demanded that the Bollywood star be summoned before the Akal Takht to clarify his role in the Delhi riots.
Peer Mohammad, along with Jagjit Kaur, a Delhi resident, submitted a sealed packet to Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh during the meeting of Sikh head priests here on Saturday.
He claimed that the envelope contains proofs of Bachchan’s role in instigating mobs against Sikhs. The jathedar may open the packet before the next meeting of the clergy, the date for which is yet to be decided.
Peer Mohammad, who heads one of the many factions of the AISSF, had brought the envelope during the January 3 meeting of the clergy, but did not submit it as the head priests were occupied with various other matters.

{{/usCountry}}The AISSF leader has claimed that the proofs were sent to him by California resident Manjit Singh Saini who, in 1984, was residing in the Kalu Sarai locality of Delhi. A letter written by Bachchan and addressed to the Akal Takht head was also delivered to Giani Gurbachan Singh in the meeting of the clergy held in December.
The letter was delivered by Gurinder Singh Bawa, an SGPC member from Mumbai. In the letter, the cine star dubbed the allegations on his role in the riots as “baseless”.
