Results of Class 9 of UT government schools, declared on Thursday, reflect that percentages of students asked to retake maths, science and social studies is again on the higher side. Even as the UT education department is yet to compile the results, principals have submitted their respective result sheets to the district education officer (DEO).
Sample this: In Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16, 18% students have failed with principal Anujit Kaur claiming that 48 students have got compartment in various subjects.
Interestingly, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) does not use the word compartment, but uses a term — eligibility for improvement of performance — to mean the same.
In GMSSS-10, 11 students could not clear the exams. Most school authorities hold the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system responsible for the poor scores in tests. Under the system, no student is detained till Class 8, irrespective of performance and promotion to the next class is guaranteed.
Suddenly, in Class-9 students have to score a minimum of 25% score in the theory segment in addition to the regular projects they are assigned. Many fail to make the cut.
“The reason behind result of this nature is the no-detention policy till Class 8. If the CBSE removes the no-detention policy in this session, the results of government schools will drop badly. However, it will be better and productive,” said Arvind Rana, a teacher at Government School, Sarangpur. In Government School Ram Darbar, 47 students in Class 9 have got compartment with the overall pass percentage at 88.9%. In GHS-35, around 81% students could clear the exam in the first attempt.

{{/usCountry}}“About 14 students have got compartment this year and will have to sit for the retest. A lot of kids end up going to their village for a stretch of two months and end up missing classes. Besides, no detention policy till Class-8 also leads to this as children are unable to cope with the pressure in Class 9,” said principal Amita Chadha.
“Under the RTE guidelines, no student can be detained till Class 8. In Class 9, the CCE system puts a lot of pressure on the student as he/she has to get at least 25% marks in theory. This leads to stress,” said a principal.
Students who have failed in the first attempt are entitled to another attempt to clear their compartments. If they do not get through in the second attempt, they are detained in the same class. Sources said a few students who got compartments this time were among detainees in the same class last year as well.
