Video footage of the incident flashed on TV channels on Monday show that the cops slapped the woman, roughed her up and hit her with batons.

While the police claimed that the woman’s family had misbehaved with the cops, she said she had complained to the policemen after somebody teased her, but instead of taking action, they attacked her and her father. Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident.

DGP Sumedh Singh Saini has ordered the suspension of two constables involved in the incident, Saraj Singh and Davinder Kumar. An inquiry has been marked to an SP-rank officer, who has been asked to submit the report in seven days.

Deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal has asked the DGP to take strict action against such policemen.

"It is imperative for every member of the police force to act in a most disciplined and professional manner. There is zero tolerance towards any misconduct, especially against women," Sukhbir said. Talking to HT, Tarn Taran SSP KS Dhillon said, "A taxi driver had teased the girl, but when she, along with her father and brother, confronted him, a brawl ensued. When a police team tried to intervene, they misbehaved with the cops. But this does not justify the incident. We will ensure strict action against the policemen involved."
