BRO commander KP Rajendra said, “We are finally able to connect the 39.6km-long road between Darcha and 5,050 meter high Shinkula Pass, which will connect people of Lahaul Valley with Zanskar Valley.”

According to BRO Commander there was a proposal to connect Shinkula Pass from both sides in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu Kashmir, which would be a direct road link for Kargil Sector in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Presently there is a single way to reach Kargil via 474 km long Manali-Leh highway. But with the connection of Darcha Road with Shinkula Pass, the road will become an option to reach Kargil sector directly as a shortest route for army vehicles, which at present were forced to ply via Manali-Leh highway,” said Rajendra.

Due to heavy snowfall in the region, the road remains closed for vehicular activities from October onward till month of June every year.
