The central executive committee of AFST unanimously approved the recommendations of a scrutiny committee and panel of judges to select Singh for this award. The award will be presented in the inaugural ceremony of ICFoST-22, scheduled to be held on December 6 at Central Food Technological and Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore.

Singh is one of the best known food scientists of Punjab, who normally prefers to work in his laboratory rather than venturing out to lay claim to his research work, which the administrators of the state have to this day failed to acknowledge. He has won several international awards and his research in cereals has won him several appreciations and awards.

He is already a fellow of the prestigious Indian National Science Academy (INSA), National Academy of Sciences (NASI) and National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS).
