“I did not become the mayor to take further the agenda of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or the Congress, but for the welfare of city residents,” said mayor Poonam Sharma, while addressing the media a week before the completion of her tenure.
Irrespective of his or her political background, a mayor should work “to give something better to the city residents and initiate development projects”, said the Congress mayor.
Listing out her achievements as the city mayor, Poonam Sharma said her only regret was that she could not come up with a pound for stray dogs. “I wanted to come up with a dog pound, which could have been possible if residents had contributed Rs 10 each. The amount could have been collected along with the water bill. It would have helped in solving the stray dog menace. But I could not do so due to constraints,” she said.
Mayor, who was known to act against gambling, said the multilevel parking in Sector 17 was almost complete, and it would accommodate around 950 vehicles. “Rani Laxmi Bai Mahila Bhawan has been inaugurated in Sector 38 and the proposal regarding the construction of two multilevel parking lots in Sector 34 has been prepared,” she said.
Listing out her other achievements, Poonam said 12 posts of sub-divisional officers (SDOs) had been sanctioned by the local government and recruitment process was in progress. The outgoing mayor also credited herself for coming up with the insurance scheme for electricians and sewermen working in the municipal corporation and providing streetlights and LED lights in different parts of the city. She said compensation of Rs 2 lakh each had been given to the family of three sewer men, who lost their lives during work.

{{/usCountry}}The mayor stated that during her tenure round-the-clock water supply started in the rehabilitation colony Vikas Nagar, Maulijagran, afternoon water supply started to the Industrial Area, Phase 2, and approximately 600 connections of tertiary treated water were provided in private houses and institutions with an area of more than 1 kanal.
Municipal commissioner B Purushartha, joint commissioners Rajiv Gupta and Virender Chaudhary, chief engineer Mukesh Anand and medical officer PS Bhatti were also present during the conference.
