In the wake of the incident in which unidentified armed men fired at Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Naresh Kumar, 38, in Ludhiana on January 18, Jalandhar-based office of RSS has started taking preventive measures to avoid any untoward incident.
The local RSS office in Gopal Nagar has requested the city police to install girders on the road outside their office so that any vehicle crossing the area has to slow down. The request was also made to avoid random parking outside the branch office.
Local head of RSS wrote a letter to police division number 2 on February 2, asking them to put up girders in the area as a preventive measure.
“After the Ludhiana incident, we have sent a request to the police department to take steps against random parking of cars that increases the risk of incidents,” said Kuldeep Bhagat, RSS city head.
He also said that about five months ago, some young boys were caught pelting stones outside the branch office. The incident was captured in CCTV cameras. The attackers were later released by police after a warning.
“Though we had taken that incident lightly, we are now forced to approach police for better security measures,” Bhagat said. Police have communicated to the roads and building department of Jalandhar municipal corporation (MC) to put up girders in the area with immediate effect. “I have asked the concerned officials to complete the work in the area on priority,” said Kulvinder Singh, MC superintending engineer.

Officials said girders would be put up on the road with spacing of approximately 8 feet, which will only allow one car to pass through it at a time, thereby reducing the speed of vehicles and reducing the risk of any incidents.
Locals in the area said that on many occasions, abandoned cars could be seen parked in the area without any check.
“We have asked the MC to put up girders in the area and have deployed two cops for patrolling the area throughout the day,” said Jivan Singh, station house officer.
