The Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (KMV) has become the first college affiliated with the Guru Nanak Dev University to be given Kaushal Kendra status by the UGC. The college had earlier been given the heritage status and has been granted community college status by the UGC.
The 'Deen Dayal Upadhyay Kaushal Kendra' status has been awarded under a skill development and training centre scheme of the Government of India to ensure employability and empower the youth.
Under the Kaushal Kendra scheme, there are five job-oriented and skill development bachelor of vocation courses, which include those dealing with the office management and secretarial practices, retail management, textile designing and apparel technology, nutrition, exercise, health, fashion photography and journalism.
The minimum qualification for pursuing the courses is 10+2 and the courses are open for all age groups. The fee is Rs 7,500 per semester.
The UGC has sanctioned a grant of Rs 4.15 crore for the kendra. Atima Sharma, principal of the KMV, said out of 708 applications, only 48 were selected. These include applications from three colleges in Punjab.
"We did a lot of homework and research. We set a detailed syllabus. A lot of hard work was done and the result is before us," said Sharma.Talking about the teachers for the new courses, she said experts across a range of fields would be called in to teach the students. "The KMV has signed approximately 25 MoUs with top industries to train the students," she added.
