For nearly a month, the police groped in the dark even to identify the victim. However, once this was done, it did not take them much time to solve the murder mystery.

The Chabbewal police recovered a blood-stained body of a woman from a secluded place in Chak Narial village on April 30. When the customary methods did not yield any result, the picture of the victim was uploaded on Facebook. Someone recognised the woman and informed her family.

On May 27, one of her relatives in Rahon in Nawanshahr, identified her as Balbir Kaur and told the police that her relations with her NRI husband were not cordial. Following the lead, the police zeroed in on the accused.

SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill claimed that the accused Tejinderjit Singh and Rajwinder Singh, residents of Jeedowal village, who were arrested on Monday, had confessed to the crime and told the police that they had been entrusted the task of eliminating Balbir by Sukhvir Singh.

Chabbewal DSP Kulwant Singh Heer revealed that the accused had asked Balbir to accompany them to a religious place, but they took her to Chak Narial instead and stabbed her to death. He said that the NRI suspected his wife's fidelity.
