Just 110 of 36,000 students studying on the Panjab University campus and the University School of Open Learning (USOL) applied for scholarship from the student-aid fund in 2016-17. Out of 110, 94 have been found eligible.
This scholarship is apart from fee concessions applicable to needy students and here students whose family income is upto Rs 4 lakh may apply. The information will be put up before syndicate meeting on April 30.
PU takes Rs 50 per annum from each student for maintaining the student-aid fund. “We hardly get any applications. In fact, all those who applied have got it. Just 110 applications came out of 36,000 students at PU,” said professor Navdeep Goyal, who is a part of a committee formed to decide the applications.
Just 61 application were received from PU teaching departments and 49 came from USOL. Just 2 were found ineligible out of 61 applications of teaching departments, while from USOL 14 applications were not found in order. The rejected applications are of those whose family income certificates were either attested by the notary or self.
During the deliberation in the committee to choose students for scholarship, professor Goyal said that only valid income certificates from executive magistrate or tehsildar or employer were allowed as per the guidelines in Hand book of Information and Rules for admission for the grant of finance assistance. He added under the student-aid fund and those affidavits attested by notary or self would not be acceptable.

{{/usCountry}}PU to revise remuneration of outside assignments for teachers
Chandigarh: Panjab University is all set to increase remuneration for outside assignments for teachers and bringing an amendment in ‘Acceptance of Outside assignments and Permission for doing other than normal work’ in the PU calendar.
Earlier, teachers were not allowed to receive an honorarium of more than Rs 2,400 per month. But now it will be increased to Rs 25,000 per month.
The other condition is that it will be a limited participation and teachers of day classes shall be allowed to take up lectures in the afternoons. Also, the condition that travelling allowances in addition to honorarium should be only realistic remains the same.
A committee was set up by the vice-chancellor which decided on March 16 that amendment be brought. The committee under professor Sanjeev Puri, honorary director CIPP, professor Navdeep Goyal, the department of Physics, professor BS Ghuman, dean of faculty of Arts, professor Anupam Bawa of UBS, professor RK Singla, director of computer centre, decided that honorarium of Rs 2,400 has been continuing for long and not realistic in the present-day situation and so it should be revised. The issue will be discussed in the syndicate meeting on April 30.
