A 31-year-old junior resident doctor at the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) — Sunil Chandel, of Himachal Pradesh — was found hanging from a ceiling fan at his rented residence in Sector 16, Chandigarh, on Friday morning. A suicide note was recovered from the spot, the police said.
Chandel, who was taking treatment for depression, was deployed at the nuclear medicine department at the PGIMER. He did his MBBS from a medical institute in Punjab and is survived by a pregnant wife, Reena Rana.
Reena has told the police that Chandel did not respond to her calls for breakfast around 7am on Friday and did not stir out of the room for 15 minutes.
She raised and alarm and neighbours gathered at the spot and informed the police. A police team rushed Chandel to the PGI where duty doctors declared him brought dead.
The police have started inquest proceedings under Section 174 (unnatural death) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) at the Sector 17 police station and have handed over the body to the family after the post-mortem.
Dr BR Mittal, head, Nuclear medicine said, “He was good in his work and was doing fine. I have now been told that he was suffering from depression, I did not know about it earlier. It has come as a shock to us.”
