Seven persons were killed in two road mishaps in Punjab on Monday. In both cases, relatives of the deceased are suspecting foul play.
Five residents of Khiranwali village in Kapurthala district were crushed to death by a heavy vehicle on the Kapurthala-Goindwal Sahib road. Police claimed that prima facie it was an accident, but some family members and villagers alleged that it was murder.
The five pedestrians were on their way to the nearby gurdwara of Baba Hathan Sahib around 4am when the incident occurred. The victims were identified as Narinder Kaur, 55, Kulwant Kaur, 54, Kulwinder Kaur, 56, Harjinder Kaur, 57 and Balwinder Singh, 30.
Police registered a case at Fattudhinga police station under sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the unidentified driver.
Meanwhile, two Haryana women were drowned and four of their relatives were feared dead when their car fell into the Sirhind canal near Machhiwara early on Monday morning.
The police fished out the bodies of Rajwinder Kaur (25) of Khatuya village, Shahbad, and Manpreet Kaur (30) of Khurdar village, Ladwa.
Dalbir Singh (27) of Sahapur village, Ambala, who was driving the car, was rescued by passersby. Manpreet’s husband Jagtar Singh, who was not among the passengers, alleged that Dalbir had driven the car into the canal with the intention of killing his (Dalbir’s) wife Gurpreet Kaur over a marital dispute.
