SGPC observes death anniversary of Indira’s assassins

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), along with various Panthic groups, on Tuesday observed the death anniversary of Kehar Singh and Satwant Singh, who were hanged to death on January 6, 1989, in the Indira Gandhi assassination case.

The Dal Khalsa and other hardline groups reiterated their demand for a memorial to Satwant Singh, Kehar Singh and Beant Singh, the third accused in the case.

Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh honoured Satwant’s father Tirlok Singh and Kehar’s brother during the ceremony held in the Golden Temple complex. He termed both as ‘great martyrs’.

Jathedar calls for Panthic unity Speaking on the occasion, the jathedar stressed the need for Panthic unity. He urged all Panthic groups not to fight among themselves over the Nanakshahi calendar issue.

“We should all unite to get the Sikh detainees released. Without complete unity and harmony, the Sikhs won’t be able to get justice,” he said, while pointing out that the Sikh calendar issue was an internal matter and it would be resolved amicably at an appropriate time.
