A day after theft was reported from chief minister Virbhadra Singh’s ancestral palace at Sarahan, Shimla police formed a special investigative team (SIT) to investigate the case.
Unidentified men broke into the Shantikunj palace in Sarahan-170 kilometer from here and decamped with 3 kilogram of silver on intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
Additional DGP (law and order) Sanjay Kundu visited Sarahan on Sunday while Shimla Superintendent of Police (SP) DW Negi left for Sarahan on Monday afternoon. Negi confirmed that a SIT is formed to investigate this incident which will be headed by additional SP (rural) Sandeep Dhawal. “Seven members SIT has been constituted which will be headed by ASP (rural) and will include deputy SP Rampur and Theog as members,” Negi told HT.
The thieves broke in through the main gate and decamped with 3kg silver, including one silver-made table lamp of 1kg, four silver flower pot each weighing 250g and one ready-made silver-made temple of 1kg. The caretaker Prem Raj informed the police about the incident on Sunday morning. A police official said only items from the temple, which was adjoining to the bedroom, were stolen, while no other things have been touched.
“Preliminary probe suggests that the thieves were familiar with the palace as he directly went to the temple and decamped with silver made items,” he said, requesting anonymity.
