These 4.5 hours are the crucial window period hours, which once lost can cause unprecedented losses,” said senior consultant neurosurgeon, Dr Vishnu Gupta and consultant neurologist , Dr Alok Jain, at Fortis Hospital.

Dr Jain explained that stroke was a potentially curable condition in many cases. When the patient reaches an adequate medical facility within 4.5 hours of stroke, he or she can be injected with a brain clot dissolving drug, which restores the blood supply to brain and reduces the residual paralysis.

Citing examples of t wo patients recently admitted to Fortis hospital, Ludhiana , a 60 year old lady with right sided paralysis and a 68 year gentleman with left leg paralysis, Dr Jain said these patients were instantly given clot dissolving drug on their arrival.

Dr Gupta, who holds special expertise in interventional techniques, said nowadays highly advanced facilities of intra-arterial clot removal and mechanical clot removal were available.
