Big fat weddings are increasingly becoming a popular trend among young couples these days. But spending too much on weddings could result in divorce, says a recent study by two American researchers. Andrew Francis-Tan and Hugo M Mialon from the Emory University in Atlanta conducted a survey of over 3,000 married couples in the US and found that “the duration of marriage is inversely associated with spending on the wedding ceremony.”

According to the study, the weddings that cost between $5,000 ( approx ₹3 lakh) to $10,000 (approx ₹6.8 lakh) show less chances of ending in divorce than weddings that cost $20,000 (approx ₹13 lakh).
The findings also reveal that the more expensive the engagement ring, the less likely the marriage will last. “Specifically, in the sample of men, spending between $2,000 and $4,000 (£3,000) on an engagement ring is associated with 1.3 times greater hazard of divorce as compared to spending between $500 (£376) and $2,000,” the paper says, according to The Independent.
Interestingly, the study finds that jetting off on a honeymoon is “significantly associated with a lower hazard of divorce.” Looks like splurging on honeymoon might be a good idea instead of spending a fortune on the wedding!
