“Our show is actually a tribute to the 100 years of Indian cinema. There might be similarities between the show’s characters and many film stars, but we haven’t singled out any particular actor and focused the show entirely on his/her life,” says Prashaant Bhatt, programming head, Colors.

Shot on a scale that matches the grandeur of the film industry, the show will provide a glimpse into the lives of Bollywood stars, their challenges and struggles of the people behind and in front of the arclights. The show will star Raj Zutshi, Shagufta Ali, Sushmita Mukherji, Drashti Dhami and Vivian Dsena. It will premiere on May 28.

“Madhubala will be Indian television’s first ever magnum opus set against the backdrop of the film industry. It will reveal the different aspects that make the glitz and glamourous side of the film industry,” says Bhatt.

He adds: “To amplify the overall experience while highlighting the larger-than-life film industry, we have shot scenes in real locations across Mumbai, and in Ramoji Film City, which is a first for television.”

Thrilled to be part of this big budgeted show, Drashti says, “I play Madhubala, who’s born and brought up in Mumbai. Due to unforeseen circumstances, she enters Bollywood and ends up becoming a star, which was never her goal.”

Vivian plays superstar RK who spots Madhubala and turns her into a star. “RK is a star kid who is successful, confident and clear about what he wants in life,” he says.
