Priyanka Chopra hopes Quantico opens new doors for Indian talent

‘I truly believe that we have a huge pool of talent in India, which spans actors, directors, technicians and the like, and there is a huge window of opportunity for them to explore outside India,’ Priyanka Chopra says.

Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra has expressed hopes that her leading role in hit United States television show Quantico will help pave the way for other Indian actors to make it big in America. In an email interview to AFP, the Mary Kom star said, “I can only hope that it opens the right doors. I truly believe that we have a huge pool of talent in India, which spans actors, directors, technicians and the like, and there is a huge window of opportunity for them to explore outside India.”

Priyanka, 33, has been steadily spreading her wings in the US. She first launched a music career and later lent her voice to a Disney character for film Planes. Besides, she has been a part of mainstream American television drama , ABC’s Quantico. On Quantico, she plays the lead character of Alex Parrish, a half-American half-Indian who becomes the FBI’s prime suspect.

The former Miss World is blazing a trail as the first Indian lead in a US TV series, playing FBI agent turned suspected terrorist Alex Parrish in the ABC thriller. She has received glowing reviews for her Quantico. She has also received an offer to host a celebrity chat show for ABC. Priyanka is busy with Quantico and her Bollywood commitments, but she liked the concept of the talk show and plans to accommodate dates for it, sources were quoted as saying.

Priyanka Chopra plays an FBI trainee named Alex Parrish, a half-Caucasian-half-Indian based in Quantico, Virginia.

The star of Bollywood hits such as Dil Dhadakne Do and biopic Mary Kom added that she felt it was important that her Indian-American character was ethnically ambiguous. “There is a lot of diversity in the characters on Quantico but it’s not a cliched representation,” she said.

“It is, however, more a mirror to society in the USA -- a multi-cultural mix of people from all over the world, connected to their ethnicity in some way but who primarily consider themselves citizens of the United States of America,” she added.

Back home, Priyanka gears up for the December release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s most-talked about project Bajirao Mastani. She also has Prakash Jha’s Jai Gangajal in her kitty. The movie will hit theatres next year.
