Mounting concerns over civil rights in Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous Chinese city. The former British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997 with the promise of protection of rights. After the 2019 anti-govt protests, China imposed a sweeping national security law in the city. China's sweeping national security law restricts freedoms promised to Hong Kong. The law criminalises secessionism, subversion & foreign collusion to intervene in Hong Kong's affairs. John Lee, who became the face of the nat'l security law and oversaw raids & arrests, is set to replace Carrie Lam.
