EU rebel to quit Western bloc to join Russia as Ursula announces gas import ban?| Slovakia| Fico

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico sharply criticized the EU’s plan to phase out Russian gas by 2027, arguing the move harms Slovakia’s economy and violates the principle of unanimity. Fico said Brussels pushed the decision through using a qualified-majority vote to sidestep countries like Slovakia and Hungary, which rely heavily on Russian supplies through the Druzhba pipeline. He insisted Slovak imports make up only a small share of Moscow’s energy revenue and dismissed claims they fund the war. With both Bratislava and Budapest considering legal action, the dispute adds fresh tension to the EU’s energy and sanctions policy.
