At least 20 people were injured, including six critically, after a major fire broke out in a naphtha pipeline at Haldia Petrochemicals Limited in East Midnapore district, West Bengal, early on June 30. The blaze erupted around 5 a.m., prompting the deployment of nearly 10 fire tenders to control the flames. Several shanties located near the pipeline were gutted in the fire. According to Haldia Petrochemicals Limited, preliminary findings suggest the incident may have occurred near an unauthorized naphtha theft point. The company said naphtha is a highly combustible and extremely flammable hydrocarbon and reiterated its warnings against illegal access to petroleum products. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.
