A powerful, shallow magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck near Ende, off Flores Island in eastern Indonesia, at 5:58 a.m. local time on August 15, prompting tsunami warnings and coastal evacuation orders. Indonesia’s BMKG told residents in affected areas to move away from beaches and riverbanks and seek higher ground as authorities monitored sea levels.
