Watch: Egypt looks to break Guinness World Record for longest Iftar table

Updated on Jun 27, 2015 05:56 pm IST

The Egyptian city of Alexandria on Friday hosted an Iftar meal on what it hoped to be the world's longest table. The idea originally came to a group of engineering students, and hundreds of volunteers took part in organising the table, which could seat up to 10-thousand people for the Iftar dinner. Ossama Barakat, one of the organisers of the event, said the 4.5 kilometre long table had surpassed in length the previous record-holder Italy's table, which he said was two kilometres long (1.2 miles). During Ramadan, the holiest month in Islam, millions of Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, smoking and sex from dawn to dusk.
