Libya’s Army Chief of Staff was killed in a plane crash on December 23 after the aircraft went down near Ankara while returning to Tripoli following a visit to Turkey. Turkish authorities said the plane lost radio contact around 40 minutes after take off and had earlier requested an emergency landing. Wreckage was later found near Kesikkavak village in Ankara’s Haymana district. The jet was a leased Maltese aircraft and the cause of the crash remains unclear. Three other Libyan officials and a photographer were also on board. An investigation is underway and Libya has declared three days of mourning.
