Voting for all 126 seats in Assam is underway today in a single-phase, high-stakes assembly election, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, and AIUDF locked in a crucial three-cornered contest. More than 25 million eligible voters are casting their ballots across 126 constituencies, making this one of the most significant electoral battles in the state’s recent political history. Ahead of polling, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the revered Kamakhya Temple and offered prayers. Speaking after his visit, Sarma said he prayed for Assam’s prosperity and for the continued progress of its people. Meanwhile, Assam Congress President and Jorhat Assembly candidate Gaurav Gogoi cast his vote in Jorhat along with his mother. Calling it an important day for Assam, Gogoi said the enthusiasm among voters signaled hope for change and expressed confidence that the state would witness “a new Assam” when results are declared on May 4. The election is being closely watched as a major test of political strength for all major parties in the northeastern state.
