Free Indo-Pacific, Afghanistan: What PM Modi discussed with Japan's Suga

  • PM Modi met his Japanese counterpart Yoshihide Suga on Day 1 of his 3-day trip. PM Modi and Suga's bilateral meeting comes a day ahead of QUAD summit. Both India and Japan are part of QUAD, along with the US and Australia. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment towards a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. They also exchanged views on recent global developments, including in Afghanistan. he two Prime Ministers agreed to enhance bilateral security and defence cooperation. The leaders welcomed the increasing economic engagement between the two countries. PM Modi highlighted the need to develop bilateral partnerships in manufacturing, MSME and skill development. This was PM Modi's first in-person meeting with Suga after the latter took over as Japan PM in September last year.
