US gymnast Maroney lawsuit claims that settlement covered up sex abuse
Updated on Dec 21, 2017 07:52 pm IST
Olympic gold medallist McKayla Maroney has sued USA Gymnastics (USAG), alleging the organisation forced her to sign a non-disclosure agreement about sexual abuse she endured from former national team doctor Larry Nassar. The lawsuit, filed by attorney John Manly in the Los Angeles Superior Court, states that Maroney was forced to sign a confidentiality agreement in December 2016, because she needed money to pay for psychological treatment. The suit alleges Maroney, who won a team gold and an individual silver on vault as part of the “Fierce Five” US women's team at the 2012 Olympics, was sexually abused by Nassar from about 2009 to 2013 while she was a teenager.
