Pollution debate in LS: Rahul pushes for discussion, Rijiju signals openness

Published on Dec 12, 2025 01:33 pm IST

In the Lok Sabha, Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi urged the government and opposition to treat air pollution as a shared crisis rather than an ideological battlefield, saying that most major Indian cities are choking under “poisonous” air that is damaging children’s lungs, fuelling cancer, and making it hard for the elderly to breathe. Emphasising that “everybody in this House would agree” on the seriousness of the issue. Gandhi suggested Parliament should ask only what can be done now and in the coming years for the people of India, and ruling BJP minister Kiren Rijiju responded in agreement, signalling rare bipartisan openness to collaborate on tackling pollution.
