Reporter's difficult question leaves Trump floundering - 'Why are US troops still in Syria? '| Israel

Published on Dec 16, 2025 09:02 am IST

Answering questions on Gaza and Syria, President Donald Trump says his relationship with Benjamin Netanyahu is “very good” and that the recent Israeli strike on a Hamas general is still being reviewed to see if it breached the ceasefire. He backs Syria’s new leader as a “strong man” uninvolved in the ISIS ambush that killed US troops, vows militants “will be hit hard,” and explains US forces remain in Syria to preserve what he calls “legitimate peace in the Middle East,” built on a B‑2 bomber strike that he claims wiped out Iran’s nuclear capability. Trump also boasts that 59 countries support his regional peace architecture and says an international stabilisation force in Gaza is “already running” and will grow as more nations contribute troops.
