'SIR is nothing but backdoor NRC': AIMIM chief Owaisi challenges govt in Parliament with bombshell

Published on Dec 10, 2025 08:40 pm IST

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, speaking in Parliament, claimed the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists is “nothing but backdoor NRC,” accusing the Election Commission of using the exercise in Bihar to quietly implement a citizenship test that will disenfranchise the poorest. Owaisi argued the EC has no mandate to determine who is a citizen, warned that demanding multiple birth documents for voters and their parents will push many genuine Indians off the rolls, and said such moves weaponise bureaucracy against vulnerable communities while undermining faith in the electoral process.
