Tokyo 2020: Sindhu inches closer to medal; boxer Lovlina gears up for semifinals

  • Day 7 of the Tokyo Olympics proved to be a fruitful affair for India. Shuttler PV Sindhu, boxer Lovlina Borgohain triumphed in their quarter-final matches. Lovlina punched her way to the semi-final of the women's welterweight category. The boxer defeated Chinese Taipei's Chen Nien-Chin by a split decision. Lovlina's performance has ended India's wait for a second medal at the Tokyo Games. Earlier this week, it was ace weightlifter Mirabai Chanu who bagged the first silver. Boxer Lovlina Borgohain is assured of at least a bronze medal now. She will be the third Indian boxer after Vijender Singh, Mary Kom to win an Olympic medal. Reigning world champion Sindhu marched on to the final four with a 21-13, 22-10 victory. The star badminton player beat over World No. 5 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan. Women's hockey team beat Ireland 1-0 to stay alive in Olympics. Earlier in the day, India's archer Deepika Kumari bowed out of the Olympics. Deepika fell short against Korean top seed An San in women’s individual quarterfinals. World no.1 Deepika had beaten former world champion Ksenia Perova of ROC in pre-quarters.
