Trump says Hormuz ‘belongs’ to America but where are US warships amid Iran’s withdrawal claims?

Published on Oct 07, 2026 08:10 am IST

Trump has asserted that the Strait of Hormuz is under U.S. control, while Iranian officials claim American warships have moved hundreds of kilometres away from the strategic waterway. Trump previously said the U.S. had effective control of the strait and described American naval forces as capable of maintaining the blockade. Meanwhile, IRGC adviser Ali Fadavi has claimed that no U.S. naval vessels remain in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz or Gulf of Oman, saying American forces have withdrawn more than 1,000 kilometres from Iran. The competing claims come as Tehran keeps the strait closed pending conditions tied to a previous agreement.
