Greenland chooses Denmark, then Trump reacts with fierce threat for NATO ally; 'going to be big...'

Updated on Jan 14, 2026 06:56 pm IST

US President Donald Trump dismissed comments from Greenland’s prime minister on Tuesday, saying it would be a “big problem” if the Arctic territory chose to remain with Denmark, as he spoke to reporters upon landing at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland. When asked about Greenland Premier Jens Frederik Nielsen’s statement that the island prefers to stay within the Kingdom of Denmark, Trump responded that he did not know who Nielsen was and openly rejected his position. Trump added that Greenland remaining with Denmark would create a “big problem” for the territory. Earlier in Copenhagen, Nielsen firmly rejected any notion of Greenland becoming part of the United States, stating that Greenland’s future lies with Denmark, NATO and the European Union. He described the situation as a geopolitical crisis and stressed that Greenland would not be owned or controlled by Washington.
