Indian govt's first reaction on Trump's 'no Russia oil' claim after US trade deal

Published on Feb 06, 2026 01:58 am IST

India has responded to Donald Trump’s claim that New Delhi would stop buying Russian oil and shift to U.S. and Venezuelan crude. The Ministry of External Affairs said energy security remains India’s “supreme priority” and import decisions are guided by national interest. Spokesman Randhir Jaiswal called Venezuela a long-standing partner but noted sanctions have limited purchases, though Indian firms remain engaged with its energy sector. Meanwhile, Russia said India is free to buy oil from any supplier, with Moscow describing bilateral energy ties as stable and mutually beneficial. The remarks follow Trump’s comments made while announcing a new India trade deal.
